This no-cook dip is the kind of nut-free go-to appetizer or snack that puts tofu recipes on the map. And if you’re wondering if a vegan recipe made with tofu could ever truly compare to that classic ‘sour cream and onion’ potato chip dip in a can—get ready to be thrilled! This onion dip mix recipe will soon be your game day, easy entertaining go-to.
Is French Onion Dip Vegan?
If you ask if store-bought French onion dip is typically vegan, that’s hard to say. So, the best answer is, No, it is not—not always.
Most sour cream and onion dips typically have one ingredient that is not dairy-free—which is sour cream.
But this easy to follow nut-free, no-cook recipe is made using only plant-based ingredients, like tofu, and it comes together in minutes.
So, instead of reading the tiny print on labels at the grocery store, why not make a batch of homemade Vegan French Onion Dip?
How to Make Dip Without Sour Cream:
Vegan French Onion Dip without using sour cream has never been easier to make than it is using this shelf-stable tofu recipe.
Making creamy dips, sauces, and cheeses without using sour cream is easy to do when there’s tofu in the mix. Tofu behaves similarly to sour cream when you use it straight from the package. That’s right—enjoy shelf-stable tofu or even tofu from the refrigerator section without heating it in any way!
So while we are not using traditional sour cream in this recipe for Vegan French Onion Dip, we use a vegan sour cream-like ingredient made from tofu. Our recipe for sour cream made from shelf-stable pantry ingredients is what we suggest using in this plant-based, dairy, and gluten-free dip recipe.
It’s important to note that even though it takes only a minute or two to whip up a batch of vegan sour cream, store-bought dairy-free sour cream also works beautifully in this recipe. You may also opt to use plain, unflavored, plant-based yogurt if you like.
One of our favorite go-to dinners, Tofu Curry in a Hurry, is a recipe using tofu in the raw, so it’s a meal that comes together quickly!
How Do You Make Onion Dip from Scratch?
So, how do you make a nut-free, oil-free, vegan onion dip from scratch using only pantry ingredients?
In this recipe, we take it one step further by making a dip without dairy sour cream. This recipe is nut-free, too, for those with allergies—and it’s so easy that kids can make it!
First, begin making this quick and easy dip by mixing the dry ingredients first.
In the future, we plan to share a recipe post featuring the dry ingredients for this dairy-free onion dip recipe. We think that a make-ahead dried French onion dip seasoning mix could come in pretty handy! We can easily imagine using the dip mix combo of dry ingredients in this recipe to season soup or a veggie burger, saving valuable time in the kitchen.
Then, once the dry ingredients are combined, stir in the dairy-free sour cream or yogurt if you prefer, and dip away!
What Can You Eat With Onion Dip?
This classic vegan French onion dip tastes fantastic with potato chips, but there is more than one way to enjoy this no-cook appetizer or snack.
In addition to potato chips, we enjoy this dip with home-baked, oil-free corn chips, as shown in this recipe.
Or how about using this no-cook dairy-free dip instead of mayo on your next veggie burger?
Serving this as a second dip alongside feta dip to pair with a plate of veggies, is of course, also a classic and terrific way to showcase homemade vegan French onion dip.
And how about a plop to top a satisfying bowl of black bean soup or maybe pea and potato curry?
We also like stirring a spoonful of this onion dip mix recipe into a bowl of no-cook mac and cheese—yum!

Nearly everyone knows that the classic combination of onion and sour cream is hard to beat when it comes to chip-worthy dipping! And this easy to make, low fat, and no-oil plant-based recipe comes together using shelf-stable pantry ingredients—which comes in handy! This protein-packed, dairy-free, gluten-free, oil-free, nut-free, recipe makes plenty for about four hungry snackers.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp of dried minced onion
- 1 tsp of dried dill weed
- 2 tsp of dried parsley flakes
- 1/2 tsp of garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp of salt - This is one of our favorite salts!
- 1 cup of dairy-free sour cream - Try our quick and easy no-cook dairy-free (3-ingredient) sour cream recipe!
- an optional drop or two of sweetener, such as pure maple syrup, to taste
- an optional topping of fresh green onions or chives
Instructions
- Stir to mix all of the other ingredients into your favorite vegan sour cream. We highly suggest this easy 3-ingredient recipe if you plan to make your own plant-based sour cream.
- Once everything is stirred together, taste and adjust the salt if you like. A little extra salt is excellent if you're planning to eat your homemade dip with something natural and unsalted such as fresh veggies. If you like, add an optional drop or two of the sweetener of choice, such as pure maple syrup. And for serving, top your creamy dip with optional sliced green onions or chives for an eye-pleasing, fresh and tasty, edible garnish.
Notes
- Make-Ahead: This dip may be eaten right away but the flavors meld together beautifully when it's had a chance to chill an hour or so in the fridge before serving. The longer it sits, the softer the dried onions become. But make no mistake—this easy dish is delicious made-ahead or enjoyed in the moment!
- Recipe Variation: To change things up, mix this onion dip seasoning with a cup of dairy-free unsweetened plant-based yogurt - it's divine! Keep in mind that the consistency is a little thinner if you choose to use yogurt in the place of sour cream; the result will be a bit more like a thick dressing than a thicker dip.
- Packaged Chip Alternatives: While we do occasionally partake in bite or two of bagged potato chips, we also love to bake a few sliced potatoes in an oven or air-fryer to enjoy with our whole food plant-based and oil-free dip. And homemade tortilla chips taste excellent with this onion dip. If you haven't tried it yet, baking a few corn tortillas in an oven or air fryer is an excellent way to enjoy some wonderfully crunchy, oil-free and gluten-free chips—and here's the recipe for this method!
